YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki hinted in a letter published today that the firm is considering branching out into NFTs in the future as a new source of revenue for creators.
“We’re always focused on expanding the YouTube ecosystem to help creators capitalize on emerging technologies, including things like NFTs, while continuing to strengthen and enhance the experiences creators and fans have on YouTube,” the letter reads.
In addition to the announcement, YouTube may be open to adding web3 support in the future.
One option for YouTube to increase the variety of ways creators can earn money is to “capitalize on emerging technologies.” According to Wojcicki, there are currently ten options for creators to monetize their content, including adsense and the newly added ‘TikTok-remix’ YouTube Shorts, the CEO mentioned that has accumulated an all time views of over 5-trillion without disclosing the numbers of new creators.
Because NFT integration in video games has become the most common use case for NFT adoption, gaming makers may be more willing to take advantage of YouTube’s new initiative.
At this point everyone is chasing the ‘gold rush’ of NFTs, after Twitter last week allowing users to show off for their NFTs and using them as profile pictures , other platforms like Instagram and Facebook are planning to implement similar features as well.
Celebrities on social media are always looking for new methods to make money. Creators can now turn their already made content into NFTs literally with a click of a button and sell them on special platforms as well as other services, such as access to private Discord discussions or exclusive items.
